Are Breadcrumbs Gluten-Free?
Breadcrumbs can be used in so many dishes, but unfortunately, many brands of breadcrumbs are not gluten-free. But if you suffer from celiac disease or have gluten sensitivities, you can still find some gluten-free breadcrumbs both online and at a grocery store near you!
If you want to add breading to meat or tofu, add a crunchy layer on top of a casserole, or thicken a soup or stew, you usually have to use some form of breadcrumbs. But if you need to avoid gluten-containing ingredients (like wheat), you have to find a gluten-free substitute for breadcrumbs.
There are two varieties of breadcrumbs, so you want to make sure you choose the right kind for the meal you want to make. Panko breadcrumbs are usually used in Asian cuisine and will result in a crunchy layer as it resists absorbing oil and other moisture. Other kinds of breadcrumbs (often called fresh breadcrumbs, dry breadcrumbs, or just breadcrumbs) absorb more moisture and will add a thickness without being crunchy. You would use this type of breadcrumb for something like stuffing or meatloaf.
For each of these gluten-free breadcrumbs brands, I’ll clarify whether or not the product is certified gluten-free or just labeled gluten-free. Certified gluten-free products have to meet certain standards whereas non-certified products just have to be free from gluten-containing ingredients, such as wheat, barley, and rye. Those with celiac disease should only consume certified gluten-free products, but those on a gluten-free diet for other reasons can eat non-certified gluten-free products if they choose.
To find the best brand for you, read through the product descriptions to see where you can purchase the product both in stores and online. Here you can also see some other features of the brand, like if it is vegan, organic, non-GMO, and more!
Be sure to check the label for the most recent product certifications and allergen warnings, as product ingredients can change at any time.
Gluten-Free Breadcrumbs Brands
4C Foods is one of the most popular and easy-to-find breadcrumbs brands out there — and they have three certified gluten-free varieties that are made with rice flour! For crunchy bread crumbs, choose 4C Gluten Free Panko Plain bread crumbs. For a less crunchy version, go with 4C Seasoned Bread Crumbs or Plain Bread Crumbs. The seasoned version is flavored with a blend of herbs, spices, and Pecorino Romano cheese.
You can find 4C bread crumbs at many grocery stores, including Walmart, Publix, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Key Food, C-Town, ShopRite, Wegmans, Stop and Shop, and more! Use their store locator to find the closest store that carries the product you are looking for.
Kikkoman also makes a popular brand of certified gluten-fre rice bread crumbs. Their Gluten-Free Panko is made with just three ingredients: rice flour, pea protein, and dextrose. Use these Panko bread crumbs to give a crispy finish to whatever you’re cooking without the wheat! It is unseasoned so that you can season them however you’d like!
These breadcrumbs are usually available at any popular grocery store. Look for Kikkoman GF Panko at your local Walmart or Target. If you can’t find them at either store, you can try using their product locator or skip going to the store and order them on Amazon!
Ian’s Breadcrumbs are perfect for anyone looking for allergy-friendly breadcrumbs! Ian’s breadcrumbs are free from gluten, casein, milk, eggs, and peanuts/tree nuts! I could not find out who “certifies” this brand as gluten-free, but according to their FAQ page, each lot of finished product requires independent third party gluten testing before it is sold in stores. Plus, this brand is 100% gluten-free, so there is no reason one of their products should accidentally contain gluten. You can choose between Ian’s Original Panko Breadcrumbs or Italian Style Panko Breadcrumbs, which are both gluten-free.
This brand might be a little harder to find in-stores because the selection can vary. You can often find Ian’s products at natural foods stores or in the natural section of your local grocery store. I suggest you check out their Where to Buy page, which makes it easy to locate a store near you. Just click on your state and a list of grocers will appear! If you have a Whole Foods nearby, you can get Ian’s breadcrumbs shipped to you with Amazon Prime Whole Foods delivery!
Aleia’s is a 100% certified gluten-free brand that has a large selection of GF breadcrumbs! All of these bread crumb products are not only gluten-free, but also dairy-free, corn-free, Kosher, non-GMO, and soy-free. There are three varieties of traditional bread crumbs that you can add to any dish: Italian bread crumbs, plain bread crumbs, and original Panko. On top of that, they also have two “Coat and Crunch” varieties — Crispy Spicy and Extra Crispy — which come with two pouches that you can use to coat meat or tofu.
You can buy Aleia’s bread crumbs right from their online store, or you can find them in a store near you using their store locator. Check out the huge list of stores that carry Aleia’s products, or scroll down to enter your zip code. Some popular stores that carry these products are Kroger, Meijer, Shaw’s, Albertsons, Jewel, Publix, Whole Foods, HEB, and more!
Kinnikinnick is a 100% gluten-free brand that is also soy-free, dairy-free, and nut-free. You can find Kinnikinnick Panko Style bread crumbs in many stores in Canada or the US. Use their store finder to see the closest stores that carry their products. Or, skip going to the store and check out one of the online retailers above!
Michelle Farms Gluten Free Bread Crumbs varieties are very highly rated on Amazon, so I had to add them to this list! You can purchase these products both on Amazon and directly from the Michelle Farms website. Check out their certified Gluten-Free Italian Style or Original Breadcrumbs. Not all of their bread crumbs are GF, so be sure that the one you purchase is labeled gluten-free on the bottle.
